New Calcia-Stabilized Zirconia Material HSY-0774

— A ceramic material that combines durability, transparency, and does not rely on rare earth elements —

Daiichi Kigenso Kagaku Kogyo Co., Ltd. (“DKK”, Osaka/Japan, Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange) has recently developed a new calcia-stabilized zirconia material “HSY®-0774” within its “DURAZR®-S series ¹”.

“DURAZR®-S series” zirconia powders are designed to produce highly durable ceramic products. Zirconia for these applications typically use a rare earth element oxide like yttria, as a stabilizer. These rare earth oxides are; however, produced only in a limited number of countries, making stable procurement a challenge. This newly developed product by DKK successfully employs calcia (calcium oxide), which is readily available as a stabilizer. By avoiding the use of rare earth elements, DKK contributes to a more reliable and stable supply of zirconia for ceramic products.

In addition, ceramic products made with HSY®-0774 retain the high durability of the DURAZR®-S series while also exhibiting high transparency. This high aesthetic appeal makes it well suited for use in jewelry components and other applications.

<Features>

1. Stable supply with no rare earth elements

Although calcia is easy to procure, when used as a stabilizer it cannot maintain its functionality at the high sintering temperatures of ordinary ceramics, making it unsuitable. This newly developed product uses DKK proprietary ATEDZ® technology ² to enable low-temperature sintering, approximately 200°C lower than conventional sintering temperatures. This makes it possible to use calcia as a raw material. The New HSY®-0774 does not use rare earth elements, which are produced in limited countries. Along with DKK production of zirconium raw material through its own supply chain, a stable and reliable supply can be assured.

2. Durability and high transparency

HSY®-0774 has high strength as part of the DURAZR®-S series, and contributes to the further miniaturization and thinning of structures. In addition, it provides hydrothermal degradation resistance, reducing the risk of cracking even in environments around 100°C, where zirconia ceramics were previously considered as unsuitable, thus enabling the production of highly durable ceramic products. In addition, by optimizing the composition of this newly developed product, DKK has succeeded in enhancing the transparency of the ceramic. With sintering by HIP ³ process, high transparency with excellent durability retention are achieved.

¹ DURAZR🄬-S series

This is a line of advanced zirconia powders for high-performance ceramic products. These materials provide higher strength and toughness in the resulting ceramics. Moreover, they can be sintered at lower temperatures than conventional zirconia, contributing to reduced CO₂ emissions during manufacturing.

Since January 2023, we have been selling HSY®-0480, one of the products in this series. In addition to the features of the series, this product does not use rare earth elements as a stabilizer and is resistant to hydrothermal degradation, even in hot water environments. Ceramic products made with this series of zirconia powders are expected to be used in a wide range of applications, including industrial equipment, various structural components, and the automotive sector for EVs and FCVs. Furthermore, replacing metal components with the ceramics is expected to reduce weight and improve electrical insulation.

² ATEDZ® technology

ATEDZ® (Advanced Toughness and Easy-sintering DKK Zirconia) technology is a proprietary method for synthesizing zirconia powders that can be sintered at 1200-1300°C, approximately 200°C lower than conventional sintering temperature of 1400-1500°C. This low-temperature sintering allows the production of zirconia ceramics compositions that were previously unattainable.

³ HIP

HIP (Hot Isostatic Pressing) is a heat treatment process in which ceramic parts are subjected to high temperature and isostatic pressure simultaneously using high-pressure gas, such as argon, to produce denser ceramic products.
